If you've been injured in an accident, it's critical that you hire an attorney who specializes in the type of injury you sustained.  Personal injury laws continue to get more and more complicated each year.  Gone are the days when you could go to your local attorney for help with any area of law.  Now, it's more important than ever that you find an attorney who is an expert in the area of law that you need.  In days past, personal injury lawyers used to handle every type of injury, such as car accident, dog bite, assault, slip and fall, etc.  More and more we are seeing that attorneys are focusing on just one specific area of law.  For example, attorneys are now focusing solely on auto accident cases.  If you approach them with another type of case, they will likely just refer you to someone who handles that area of law.

Therefore, we highly recommend that you seek out an attorney who focuses his practice on the type of injury you sustained.  Granted, there are very large law firms that accept every type of injury case, but within that firm you will find that each attorney has a specific area of expertise.  Also, the large personal injury law firms usually only accept cases involving very serious injuries because they have such high overhead with all of their support staff.  If you can't get one of the large law firms to accept your case, than you will need to start calling the smaller firms.  Most likely, the smaller law firms won't handle every area of personal injury law so it will be critical that you make sure that they have extensive experience with the type of injury you sustained.

There are many advantages to hiring a small law firm.  The smaller law firms will usually provide much more personal service.  It's likely that you will deal directly with the attorney most of the time.  Compare this to the large law firms where you will usually interact with secretaries and paralegals.  It's important that you find a personal injury law firm that will be a good fit for your needs.  Every client has different needs.   Some clients like to go into the attorney's office often to discuss their case, others don't need that in person type of interaction and prefer to communicate with their attorney over the phone and through email.  So, be sure to do your research when hiring an injury attorney so that you are happy with the law firm that you hire.  After all, some injury cases can go on for years so will will want to be comfortable with the firm that you chose.
